A time to give back and invest in religious activities
Written by student reporter, Jonny Ratner

Ramadan, whose name translates to “burning heat,” referring to the weather conditions during which Ramadan was first recognized, is widely considered one of the most important holidays on the Islamic calendar. Muslims who practice Ramadan will go hours during the day without eating or drinking and instead will use the time to participate in religious activities, attend different events, and give back to charity.
There are five principles that all Muslims must vow to live by, one of which is fasting from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan. Fasting has multiple spiritual purposes including, showing self-restraint, purifying the body, an act of sacrifice and compassion toward the many people who do not readily have access to food and water, and to build a stronger spiritual bond with Allah, the deity of the Islamic religion.
Muslims traditionally break the fast in communion with their family and community, having a big meal after sundown.
